veg spacing

Post veg spacing 
When I load a vegetable the shading isn't working which indicates the proper spacing. What am I doing wrong?

Post Shading for vegetable spacing 
This is off by default.

Click on Options->Preferences
Then click on "Show" under "Plant Spacing" Bottom right side.
