New Plan for Spring 2010!

Hello to all who may be reading this.  I am about to make my new garden plan shared for you all to see.  It is a square foot garden, with six boxes, each 4ft sq.  Not real fancy looking, but it does incorporate companion planting.  The only thing I’m having trouble with is where to put the sage (the onions hate sage).  If you know about companion planting, then please feel free to write me a comment with your suggestion.

Thank you!

May I suggest you purchase a book titled “Carrots Love Tomatoes” by Louise Riotte. My copy was published by Garden Way Publishing. I know it is still available because I have seen it in several seed catalogs.

Regarding Sage from “Carrots Love Tomatoes”, Sage protects cabbage and it’s relatives from the white cabbage butterfly and also makes the cabbage more succulent and tasty. Sage is also a good companion for carrots and does well with Rosemary. Don’t plant with Cucumbers.

You might also consider planting the sage in a large pot as an accent in your garden. I have had a sage plant in the same pot for at least four years.

I’m a rookie at a “real” vegetable garden, but I spent all day planning my plot. I used this website to help me with compatibility

I’m a North Portlander, so we should have similar needs.

    Checkout http://www.mysquarefootgarden.net/companion-planting/

I just started researching about gardening tonight and actually found the plangarden website from that link. :) She has an excel file that you can download that allows you to input a variety of plants and see how compatible they are together.

    Hello Angel,

I was planning a sfg this year as well. I stared to lay down pathways and it all turned out differently than I had planned on paper. My roommate who is helping me with the garden doesn’t understand the concept and now I feel totally stuck. I don’t have anything actually measured out yet in my garden. I thought I was going to do 2ft pathways because I have ample space for my garden so that isn’t really an issue but that looks kind of rediculous. I hope your planning is going about better than mine. Any advice is appriciated.
