In the ground

“I’ve got to put some things in the ground, even with this season coming around” (Sarah Harmer)

As usual, this song runs through my head as I finally get some things planted.  I thought that this year I would actually be on time since I ordered seeds in January, got them in March, started them indoors, and all that but a few curve balls were thrown at us…

First, the starting indoors got me all excited to get the tomatoes and peppers into the cold-shelter, so I made the mistake of doing those first, on May 10 or something.  Coldest spring on record in Saskatchewan, the cold-shelter doesn’t cut it for keeping tomatoes and peppers from getting cold.  They didn’t actually freeze, I spent a lot of effort covering them every night, but they do have white tips and are now showing signs of phosphorous deficiency.  Meanwhile, the ones safely upstairs that have only had day trips out to the cold-shelter, are doing much better.  So, I guess I will be replanting.

The reason the rest of the garden isn’t in yet, is because of the cold weather partially (It was -5 to -7 for most of the week at night!), but also because, at the last minute I decided to convert the whole garden into “square foot garden” raised boxes.  So the start up was a little more than just throwing compost into the existing soil, tilling, and planting.  It involved building boxes, making the soil mix (Mel’s mix), before planting.  Right now only two of the four boxes are ready to plant in.  My hubby should be finishing the other two today.

So, that leaves me at 7am on a Tuesday morning enjoying coffee and internet, after hurredly putting in onions, beans, and spinach into my square foot garden, before rushing off to sit at a desk all day.
